The OCEAN Project: Transforming Maritime Safety Through Innovation

Empowering Mariners for Safer Seas

The OCEAN Project equips all users, from independent mariners to large organisations, with real-time data to address hard-to-see hazards, enhancing navigational safety and marine conservation. By fostering a global network of maritime professionals, the project mitigates risks such as collisions with marine mammals and floating debris, shaping a safer future for oceans worldwide.

Ship strikes are one of the greatest threats to large whales globally, while floating containers pose significant risks to vessels. The OCEAN Project stands out as a multidisciplinary EU Horizon Europe-funded initiative designed to significantly reduce navigational accidents, save lives, protect the environment, and minimise economic losses.

Addressing Whale Strikes and Near-Field Threats

Ship strikes on whales and near-field threats such as floating containers remain critical challenges. The OCEAN Project’s technology provides real-time alerts, enabling mariners to take pre-emptive actions such as adjusting speed or navigating around sensitive areas. By integrating hydrophone data, satellite imagery, and predictive models, the system offers comprehensive insights to minimise risks while maintaining operational efficiency.

  • Empowering Human Decision-Making: The system equips mariners with actionable information, balancing conservation needs with operational safety. Alerts integrate seamlessly into existing navigational tools, ensuring ease of use and swift response

Accessible for All Users

The OCEAN Project’s tools and systems are designed to be accessible and scalable, catering to independent mariners, small vessel operators, and large maritime organisations. Features such as the OCEAN Reporting App and the ENHI ecosystem make it simple for users of all sizes to adopt and benefit from these innovations without requiring specialised infrastructure or training.

  • Ease of Use: Tools are intuitive and accessible on standard devices
  • Scalability: Suitable for individual vessels or entire fleets
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Free tools like the OCEAN App are deploy-able with minimal investment, making them viable for any operation.
